Welcome to Indian Social Institute
New Delhi

NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

The Indian Social Institute, New Delhi, was established in the year 1951 in response to the challenges of nation building and a new emerging social order in an independent India. The vision of the Institute is to build a just, humane, secular and democratic Indian society wherein the poor and marginalized communities cherish equality, dignity, freedom, justice, peace and harmony. Of late, the Institute has stated playing its role in respect of human rights of persons with disability.

In view of the above, the Institute is organizing a 3-day International Consultation on  Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities from 17th to 19th January, 2020 (both days inclusive) at its premises. The main attractions of this Consultation are the august presence of Prof. Anna Lawson, eminent disability rights scholar from the University of LEEDS, UK and a Moot Advisory Proceeding to be conducted before a Jury consisting of Hon’ble Justice Madan B. Lokur (retd), Supreme Court of India, Hon’ble Justice Anand Mohan Bhatarai, Supreme Court of Nepal, Hon’ble Justice A.P. Shah (retd), High Court of Delhi and Hon’ble Justice Prabha Sridevan (retd), High Court of Chennai.

The Objectives of the Consultation are:

  • To educate persons with disabilities and able bodied about basic principles underlying UNCRPD and Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016;
  • To generate and stimulate new ideas about interpretation of legal regime reflected in UNCRPD and Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016;
  • To celebrate paradigmatic shift towards social model of disability.
  • To call for formation of a society of equals;
  • To challenge and contest the hegemony of ableism.
