Learning Resources The FIDEL ROSL GOETZ Library at the Indian Social Institute (ISI) premise has been an important resource centre since the fifties, though it got the name in 1976 after a German philanthropist, who took interest in the library and had helped it generously. The Library participates in the Union serial catalogue of ICSSR (Indian Council of Social Science Research). The Indian Library Association has recognized it as a specialized Library. An excellent library has been built-up specially to cater the needs of social sciences. It specially procures books, journals, reports and audio-visual materials related to Social Sciences. It is also well equipped in the Dalit, Tribal, Law, Women, and the related areas. It has a carefully selected collection of over 40,000 volumes. The library receives 200 journals/Magazines from National and International. In addition to these, the library receives nine English Newspapers and four Hindi Newspapers Published by Indian Agencies as well as periodic bulletins/ newsletters/ house journals issued by academic, research and training institutions in India and abroad, by various Non-Governmental organizations. The library has a substantial collection of , video cassettes, CDs, DVDs, VCDs, Diskettes/Floppies, films (16mm) and slide sets on different subjects. The library is equipped to cater to the changing needs of the organizations and like-minded partners and is being developed as specialized resources catering to the needs of the marginalized groups (Dalits, tribals, and women). As per accession register entry on December 15th 2011, the library has a total of 33,903 Volumes, a collection of rare books and reference books on social sciences. The library has updated the database in a new pattern and fully computerized, making for quick and easy retrieval of information. It provides a data base information service to its users. These members have access to catalogue, reference service, bibliographic service, document delivery service, photocopying facilities etc. It has linkages with other libraries in Delhi, has resource sharing and other activities among Indian Libraries. This gives research scholars easy and quick access to the required information available in other libraries. Its online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is accessible through KOHA. Anyone can access the Library catalogue anywhere in the world. The FIDEL ROSL GOETZ Library is a computerized and specialized Library in the field of Social Science and its collection of resources has the focus area as its key content: Dalits, Tribals, Scheduled Castes, Backward Castes, Socio-Political, Labour, Women, Gender Issue, Agriculture, Governance, Panchayati Raj, Ecology, Environment, Industries, Socio Political Movements, Development, Displacement and Rehabilitation, Economy, Poverty, Human Rights, Law and Education. Reference & Referral Service A reference/ referral service, related to social science and its various aspects, is provided to individuals and organizations on demand. Queries are dealt with immediately on receipt and emphasis is given to provide pinpointed and up-to date information. Perspective & Objectives The enormous growth in the information society has made the world a global village and there is an apparent death of distance. The convergence of computing and communicating has also brought a radical change in the way libraries and information centres have been imparting information to the users. There is a paradigm shift from information-based services to knowledge-based services. Knowledge is considered as the most powerful fact in the development of the economy of a nation and is the fourth wave experienced by human lives. Libraries & Documentation Centres are the central support service of any organization, which provides dynamic support for achieving the goals and vision of services to the stakeholders. In this context the Department of Library & Documentation believes that a new and just society can be established when the marginalized are empowered to craft their lives and secure their dignity. The library is meant to support the NGOs who are working for it. Library Membership: The ISI library has three types of membership:

Library Timings: - Monday to Friday, 9.30 A.M. to 5.30 P.M. Library will remain close on all National Holidays. Membership form: - Membership form can be obtained personally or at time of joining. Services The department comprises four sections: Library, Journal, Human Rights Documentation and Information Centre. These sections are serving the various departments of the Institute as well as scholars who visit the Centre, notably research, human rights education and training. Constant efforts are made to update this unit so that the users can obtain the most recent and valuable books, documents, reports, etc. Journal Section The ISI Library receives 200 Journals/Magazines/periodicals, both national and international. Of these, subscribed journals are 112, obtained on exchange basis are 31 and on gratis 52. The library also subscribes to 10 journals in Hindi. The subscribed and exchange journals are mainly on social action, economic, labour, human rights and law, tribals, Dalits, women, education, development and health which are focused on institute priorities. Back Volumes The relevant journals are bound and kept in the library for researchers and library users. We are having the journals collections in the year 1960 onwards with bound volumes. Documentation Information is the most essential aspect of any resource centre, which leads to knowledge and in turn to innovation and development of society at large; The documentation includes newsletters, government, NGO’s, human rights, world organization reports, video cassettes, unpublish documents, data bank and research papers etc. The Documentation Centre keeps important information from different sources and documents the same to make it available to our research staff and others who are interested. These non-books collections are not accessible through our main catalogue. Presently it is recorded in code numbers according to themes. There are 700 data base updated theme-wise on 60 subjects and added 340 more data during the year 2008 – 09 Preservation links the past with the future. As the world changes rapidly around us one of the few things that will last is the knowledge and cultural heritage that we preserve for future generations. Hence information is the most essential aspect of any resources centre, which leads to knowledge and in turn to innovation & development of the society at large. Human Rights Documentation Human Rights Documentation collect news and information on major topics of social, economic and political realms and also applies itself on other activities of disseminating the current information to human rights activists, social action groups and individuals. Articles, editorials, and news items are collected from a vide range of sources, including newspapers and electronic media. On an average of 30 to 40 news clippings, articles and editorials are collected every day from 9 major English dailies and various websites on 33 major topics. The newspaper clippings and information on these topics are readily available with the department by way of soft and hard copies from the year 2000 onwards. The Human Rights Electronic News Bulletin is also prepared and electronically transmitted to its subscribers throughout world since 1999.
